This invention relates to using a low water solubility ether as an oxygenate in liquid fuels, including, but not limited to, automotive gasoline, diesel fuel and aviation fuel, used in internal combustion engines. The invention provides a fuel, comprising an ether, wherein the ether has a water solubility of less than about 3,000 mg/l at 20 DEG C and said fuel has an overall water solubility of less than about 3,000 mg/l at 20 DEG C. The invention also provides a process for making low water solubility ethers and other useful hydrocarbons. The method comprises subjecting a feed comprising C2, C3, C4 and/or C5 olefins to oligomerization to form an oligomerization product comprising normal and branched higher oelfins and subjecting at least a portion of the oligomerization product to etherification with methanol or ethanol to form an etherification product comprising branched ethers and unreacted higher olefins. |
