PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-molecular weight polyarylene sulfide(PAS) having many functional groups having reactivity with an acid or an alkali and useful as a material, etc., for molding processing of electrical components, etc., by carrying out a reaction of a specific amide compound with a specified aromatic compound and a sulfidation agent. SOLUTION: This polyarylene sulfide(PAS) has a structure of the formula (R is H, a 1-18C alkyl group or a functional group exhibiting reactivity with an acid or an alkali; n is 0-4) as a repeating unit and 400-1,500 poises melt viscosity at 300 deg.C and comprises functional groups exhibiting the reactivity with the acid or the alkali in an amount so as to provide 10-50 μmol/g. The PAS is preferably obtained by hydrolyzing an alicyclic amide compound in the presence of a polyhaloaromatic compound (e.g. p-dichlorobenzene), the alicyclic amide compound, an alkali metal hydroxide and water and then carrying out a reaction while adding a sulfidation agent into the system. |
