PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for coating the inner surface of a can, capable of being readily formed into a water-based coating, excellent in corrosion resistance, characteristics of retort, and processability at the time of canning, and useful for a can or the like for a food by compounding a specific modified polyester resin, a novolak-type phenol resin and an epoxy resin. SOLUTION: This composition for coating the inner surface of a can is obtained by compounding (D) a modified polyester resin with (E) a novolak-type phenol resin (preferably in an amount of 5-20 pts.wt.), (F) an epoxy resin, and further preferably (G) an amino resin such as a benzoguanamine resin (preferably, in an amount of 5-30 pts.wt.). The component D is obtained by reacting (A) a branch type thermoplastic polyester resin having hydroxy group at the terminal of the molecule, with (B) a polybasic acid anhydride compound such as trimellitic anhydride and ethylene glycol bis(anhydrotrimellitate), and (C) a polymer having the acid anhydride group such as styrene-maleic acid resin, and has 15-100 acid value. The ratio of the components D to F is preferably within the range of (50/50)-(95/5).
