PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the productivity of a sequentially biaxially stretched polyester film by eliminating the welding of film in a stretching machine caused by the generation of breaking in a lateral stretching machine and shortening the time loss from the breaking of the film to the restarting of production. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a biaxially stretched polyester film by stretching a film longitudinally and subsequently stretching the same laterally by a flat lateral stretching machine, a detector for detecting the breaking of the film in the lateral stretching machine is arranged and a system for stopping the hot air circulating fan in the lateral stretching machine when the breaking of the film is generated in the lateral stretching machine is employed.
