PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for transporting or storing phthalic anhydride, capable of reducing energy consumption and decreasing its quality deterioration by transporting the phthalic anhydride as a form of phthalic acid monoester, then cleaving the monoester to reproduce the phthalic anhydride. SOLUTION: This method for transporting or storing phthalic anhydride comprises transporting the phthalic anhydride as a form of phthalic acid monoester, then cleaving the phthalic acid monoester to reproduce the phthalic anhydride. The phthalic anhydride is industrially produced by catalitically oxidizing ortho-xylene or naphthalene in the gas phase. A 1-3C alcohol is preferably used for esterifying the phthalic anhydride to convert into the monoester, and methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, propyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol is concretely exemplified. The phthalic acid can be esterified by mixing the phthalic anhydride with the 1-3C alcohol and, if necessary, heating the reaction mixture with stirring to form the monoester.
