PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound obtained by substituting the carbon atom at a specific site of an aromatic ring with 13C, and having ideal properties as a tracer. SOLUTION: This new compound is an isotope-labeled benzoic acid having the carbon atom at 2- or 3-position of the aromatic ring, substituted with 13C. The compound, e.g. [2-13C]benzoic acid, is obtained by carrying out an inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction of a pyrone derivative with a 13C-labeled vinyl ether to provide 2-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]octane derivative, heating the obtained derivative to decarbonate the derivative, treating the decarbonated derivative with a base to dealkoxylate the derivative, and finally hydrolyzing the dealkoxylated derivative.
