PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document carrier which can detect a size of a document before reading the document so as to shorten the copying time. SOLUTION: Documents set at a document setting position in a paper feed tray 2101, are separated one by one from one another by a prick-up roller 2102, and are then conveyed by a paper feed roller 2103 and a separation roller 210 in the direction R before they come to a document size detecting position. A document set at the document size detecting position overhangs documents which are left at the document setting position in both longitudinal and widthwise directions. Accordingly, document length detecting sensors 2114, 2115 and document width detecting sensors 2111 to 2113 detect a size of the document at the document size detecting position. The document whose size has been detected is fed into an image reading part by means of a second paper feed roller 2108.
