PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actuate a staple function without reducing a document image even if the number of documents exceeds the fixed number of pages capable of stapling. SOLUTION: This device reads a document image, and counts the number of documents C (S62 to S64). The maximum staple binding thickness T is divided by C, the maximum thickness L of a recording sheet capable of stapling is computed, and the L with the sheet thickness N1 of the recording sheet in a paper feed cassette is compared (S65, S66). In the case of L>=N1, stapling is available using the recording sheet in the paper feed cassette. In the case of L<N1, L with the sheet thickness of the recording sheets N2, N3 (N1>N2>N3) in the respective paper feed cassettes are compared (S67). In the case of L>=N2, the stapling is available using any of the paper feed cassette. When a user selects the paper feed cassette, therefore, it is set to the paper feed cassette used while the image forming device is operating (S68 to S70).
