PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce radio noise by detecting the running condition of a vehicle, and setting the amplitude of dither current forming a command current corresponding to a desired damping characteristic and an applied current to a solenoid to a smaller value when the vehicle is substantially in the stop state as the detection result. SOLUTION: According to applied current to a solenoid 2 of a proportional solenoid valve 5 from a battery 1, a spool 3 is vertically displaced to adjust the passing amount of oil liquid 4 and change the damping characteristic of a shock absorber 6. The detection output of an acceleration sensor 7 is input to a controller 8 to compute a command current for obtaining desired damping force and dither current by a CPU 12, and then supply current where dither current is superposed on the command current is applied to the solenoid 2. As a result, when the vehicle is substantially in the stop state, the amplitude of dither current is set to a smaller value by a dither amplitude adjusting circuit 13 of the controller 8.
