PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor drive circuit in which power supply is effected efficiently while reducing generation of heat from a motor, and a printer employing it. SOLUTION: The motor drive circuit comprises a main power supply section 1 for driving a motor, a chargeable auxiliary power supply section 2, a first switch 41 provided between the main power supply section 1 and the motor 31, a second switch 42 provided between the motor 31 and the auxiliary power supply section 2 and switching the auxiliary power supply section 2 between charge and discharge, and switching control sections 51, 52 for controlling the switching timing of the first and second switches 41, 42. The switching control sections 51, 52 control the second switch 42 to discharge power from the auxiliary power supply section 2 to the motor 31 in synchronism with starting of motor drive through switching of the first switch 41.
