A fluid flow device (10) and method according to which one or more impellers (20, 22) are mounted for rotation in a chamber formed in a casing (12) that receives fluid. An outer surface (44, 46) of the impeller extends with minimal clearance relative to the corresponding portion of the wall of the casing defining the chamber, and a notch (50) is formed in the outer surface for trapping any fluid between the surface and wall portion to prevent leakage of the fluid between the impeller and the wall portion. |
