PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-absorbing material which gives a certain microbial effect by simple treatment and shows excellent safety and workability by formulating a water-absorbing polymer, a cationic microbicide or the like in a specific weight ratio. SOLUTION: This water-absorbing material comprises a composition containing (A) a water-absorbing polymer, (B) a cationic microbicide and (C) a chelating agent at ratios of components A/C=1-100 (weight ratio) and components C/B=>0.5 (mole ratio). Further, it is favorable that the component B is selected from a quaternary ammonium-based microbicide, a biguanide-based microbicide and an amino acid surfactant represented by formula I or II [at least one of R1 to R4 and R5 are each an 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl and the rest is benzyl, a 1-5C alkyl or the like; X is a halogen or an alkyl phosphoric acid of formula III (at least one of R6 and R7 is a 6-20C alkyl or alkenyl and the rest is H, methyl or the like)] and in addition (D) sodium percarbonate or sodium perborate is contained at a weight ratio of components D/B=0.2-100. |
