PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an unsafe action of dropping a rope flaw detector from occurring and an erroneous flaw detection from occurring by reducing the fatigue of the hand of a worker. SOLUTION: This holding device comprises a first hook 8 attached to a structural body 7 such as a ceiling over a hoist 1, a second hook 5D attached to a rope flaw detector 5, and a suspending string having one end fixed to the first hook 8 and the other end fixed to the second hook 5D. With the rope flaw detector 5 suspended by the suspending string 9, a detection part of the rope flaw detector 5 is moved closely to or is allowed to abut on the surface of a rope 4 using a handle provided on the rope flaw detector 5.
