PURPOSE: A data starting position searching method is provided to reproduce data by reading starting position information and ending position information of data in a read-in or read-out area when a large scratch is generated in a VMGI data area. CONSTITUTION: A method for searching a data starting position includes the steps of moving a pickup to a read-in area if video maintenance information of a disc was not read(113), reading data starting position and data ending position recorded in the read-in area(115,117), moving the pickup to the data starting position(119), and moving the pickup to a read-out area if the data starting position and the data ending position were not read in the read-in area.
