PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure high quality printing by performing overlapped printing of specified number of layers or more while shifting the print head position from the end of the width of a print head array and smoothing the temperature distribution across the width of the print head array and print density thereby eliminating stripe-like shadow printing. SOLUTION: Print data from KEY input section 4 or image input section 5 is displayed at a display section 6 and stored at the original print data 31 and print buffer 32 in the RAM 3 of a CPU 1. The print data is subjected to color correction by a correction table of an ROM 2, a carriage is moved by means of an X motor 71 in a print control circuit 7 according to a print program, a head is pressed against a recording sheet by means of an H-U/D motor 73 and ink is transferred by heating the thermal head and then a sheet is fed by means of a Y motor 72 and printed. Ink of each color is shifted down by 1/3 of the width of head array and respective colors are overlapped by shifting the position of the print head from the end of the width of head array such that they are not overlapped at the same position.
