PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the degradation of nitrogen removing performance due to the timewise fluctuation of waste water quality and quantity. SOLUTION: At the time of removing the nitrogen in waste water 1 by using a device constituted with a denitrification tank 3, a nitrification tank 4 and a settling pool 7 of the waste water treated at these tanks, a total nitrogen concn. and an ammonia nitrogen concn. of the outlet water of the settling pool 7 and a nitrate nitrogen concn. or the sum of the nitrate nitrogen concn. and a nitrite nitrogen concn. of the nitrification tank 4 are measured and a target value of treatment is set, and when the total nitrogen concn. of the outlet water is more than the target value of treatment, the fact either of the ammonia nitrogen concn. of the outlet water or the nitrate nitrogen concn. or the sum of the nitrate nitrogen concn. and the nitrite nitrogen concn. of the denitrification tank 3 is more than the target value of treatment is investigated, and in the case when the nitrate nitrogen concn. or the sum of the nitrate nitrogen concn. and the nitrite nitrogen concn. of the denitrification tank 3 is more than the target value of treatment and when both of the sum and the ammonia nitrogen concn. of the outlet water of the settling pool are less than the target value of treatment, the means for improving the denitrification reaction is executed, and when the ammonia nitrogen concn. is more than the target value of treatment, the means for improving the nitrification reaction at the nitrification tank 4 is executed.
