PURPOSE: A movement distance determining device for an optical pickup and a method thereof are provided to precisely operate a width of a single track of an optical disc regardless of optical disc manufacturing conditions or the trend toward the high density and determine a distance to move an optical pickup on the basis of the width. CONSTITUTION: A method for determining a distance for moving an optical pickup includes the steps of calculating a real movement degree of an optical pickup with respect to a predetermined input for optical pickup movement at an initial loading of an optical disc(S11,S14), operating and storing a width of a single track on the basis of the calculated movement degree(S15,S16), and determining a distance to move the optical pickup on the basis of the stored single track width(S24).
