PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To heighten color reproducibility by simultaneously realizing an achromatic picture both in the case of a white and black display and in the case of a halftone display. SOLUTION: The reflective color liquid crystal display device comprises an active matrix substrate on which plural pixels equipped with switching elements and a reflection electrode 104 are arranged in a matrix, a liquid crystal layer 103 enclosed between the substrate and a glass substrate, an optical retardation plate 102 and a polarizing plate 101. A normally black display mode is adopted. The projection of Stokes parameter (S1, S2, S3) of light, between the optical retardation plate and the liquid crystal layer, on the S1-S2 plane is nearly a straight line. Besides the polarization state of light on the reflection surface of the reflection electrode is nearly circularly polarized in the respective wavelengths. At the same time, the retardation of the liquid crystal layer, which is the product of the liquid crystal layer thickness and anisotropy of its refractive index, is >=150 nm and <=340 nm and the twist angle 113 of the liquid crystal layer is >=20 deg. and <=70 deg.. |
