摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a thin structure which improves the use efficiency of a light source when external light is used and even when an auxiliary light source is turned on, and which also improves the visibility by disposing the light source on one side face of one of transparent substrates in such a manner that the light emitted from the light source enters one of transparent substrates. SOLUTION: A light source is disposed on the side face of at least one of first and second transparent substrates so that the light emitted from the light source enters at least one of the first and second transparent substrates. In this device, the first and second transparent substrates 103, 107 consist of glass plates with electrodes formed. The first transparent substrate 103 and the second transparent substrate 107 are laminated on the peripheral part with a sealing material, and a liquid crystal layer 105 having a nematic liquid crystal with 225 deg. twist angle is held between these transparent substrates 103, 107. The light source 113 is adhered to be tightly in contact with the first and second transparent substrates 103, 107, and the light source 113 is disposed on one side facing slopes of a light controlling layer 102.
