Production of a polymeric material involves: dissolving a photochromic agent in a solvent or mixture of solvents to obtain a photochromic impregnating solution (1); impregnating a cross-linked, transparent, hydrophilic polymeric material with (1); rinsing the material with an aqueous solution to replace the impregnated solvent with the aqueous solution; and recovering the resulting photochromic polymeric material. An Independent claim is included for a hydrophilic material obtained by polymerizing a base composition comprises (meth)acrylic acid, at least one radically polymerizable hydrophilic monomer different from (meth)acrylic acid, and at least one (meth)acrylate material bearing an alicyclic hydrocarbon group.
