PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the reduction of a collation ratio by means of a fingertip fingerprint pattern in a image collation method by discriminating the coincidence of a fingerprint pattern for collation and a fingerprint pattern for reference of the basis of the information of collation between both the fingerprint patterns. SOLUTION: The fingerprint image of a finger placed on the input end face of a finger optical plate(FOP) 3 is acquired by a CCD camera 4, digitized as a collation fingerprint image and a reference fingerprint image and stored in a frame memory 5. In order to reduce an adverse influence to be exerted upon collation by a fingertip part on the basis of image signals stored in the memory 5, a digital signal processor(DSP) 11 weighs a fixed area including the fingertip part less than '1', performs operation such as high speed Fourier transformation and finds the signal of correlation between a previously stored image signal for reference and the image signal for collation at the time of figure collation. On the basis of the correlation signal found by the DSP 11, a control CPU 8 discriminates whether the collated person is a registered person himself or not.
