PURPOSE: A film scanning unit is provided to supply an additional function capable of reading not only an image of a general manuscript such as a paper but an image having a transparent medium such as a film or an OHP in a small sized personal combiner. CONSTITUTION: In a scanning unit(40) irradiates a light on a manuscript(46) using a light source(41) for a reflector, and reads the manuscript by converting a reflection light through a photoelectric conversion element, a manuscript(46) supporting board(45) made by a semitransparent medium is provided for supporting the manuscript(46). A light source(42) for a glazing material is positioned at the lower portion of the manuscript(46) supporting board(45), irradiates a light on the manuscript(46), and inputs the penetrated light on a photoelectric transducer(44). A reading control unit decides a kind of the manuscript(46), selects one out of the light source(41) for a reflector and the light source(42) for a glazing material as a reading light source in accordance with the kind of the manuscript(46), and controls a reading of the manuscript(46). The scanning unit(40) includes a blocking film(47) for blocking an incidence of other lights besides reflected lights of the light source(41) for a reflector, the light source(42) for a glazing material, a frost lens(43), the photoelectric transducer(44), the manuscript supporting board(45), and the manuscript(46) to the photoelectric transducer(44). The length of the light source(42) for a glazing material is longer than that of the manuscript(46) to be read.
