PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively obtain an image pickup device capable of taking a picture without deteriorating the quality of the picture even when the size of a pixel area for reading out a signal is changed. SOLUTION: When a mode selection circuit 8 selects a mode for selecting and reading out an area suited to the photographing of a moving image in the light receiving surface of an image pickup element 2, a system microcomputer(MC) 7 outputs an instruction for multiplying the magnification of a zoom lens 1 byαto an optical zoom lens driving circuit 5 and outputs an instruction for setting up an area suited to the photographing of a moving image to an image pickup element driving circuit 6. When the mode is switched to a still image pickup mode using all effective pixels, the MC 7 changes the magnification of the lens 1 toβin accordance with the size of the reading area of the element 2. Even when the switching of the operation mode causing a change in the reading area is executed, a video signal having no change in a field angle and no reduction of picture quality can be outputted.
