PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set only a necessary number of spacers in a prescribed position to facilitate the handling in the subsequent process by forming the spacer into a cross or T-shaped section or the shape obtained by connecting a plurality thereof. SOLUTION: A recessed part 5 for housing a spacer is provided on a non- picture element part 4 surrounded by each picture element of a phosphor film 12 on a transparent electrode 13. Although it is not necessary to set a cross spacer 1 in all recessed parts 5, it should be set as many as possible in order to improve the strength. When such a substrate is aligned and opposed to a counter substrate 15 having an electron source 11 formed thereon followed by baking, the pair of substrates are adhered together with a substrate clearance determined by the spacer. According to this, the cross spacer 1 never falls when it abuts on the counter substrate 15 by pressurization. Even if the substrate interval is reduced to a prescribed pressure, thereafter, the cross spacer 1 is never crushed, and a display module can be stably manufactured.
