PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a communication processing time by switching a communicating speed according to the operating situation of a printer. SOLUTION: A printer stores the communication condition (high speed mode) of a communicating speed faster than a normal communicating speed (normal mode) in a register according to a communication condition setting command C1 from a host. The printer clears a print buffer, and transmits a high speed mode permission communication E1 for permitting the change of the normal mode to the high speed mode to the host when it is not necessary to operate a printing mechanism. The host receives this communication E1, and communicates by switching the normal mode to the high speed mode according to data amounts to be transmitted.
