PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a carbon brush material whose normal sliding contact is maintained even in a sliding operation under a shock vibration and under a high- temperature condition, whose rectification capability is superior and whose wear resistance is high toy a method wherein a carbon brush base material is impregnated with a thermosetting resin and a thermoplastic fluororesin. SOLUTION: As a carbon brush base material, an electric graphite-based brush base material is used. The brush base material is impregnated with 1 wt.% of a phenolic resin by a low-pressure impregnation method. After that its temperature is raised up to 180 deg.C at a temperature rise speed of 10 deg.C/hr. The brush base material is held at this temperature for eight hours, and a phenolic resin-impregnated carbon brush material is obtained. Then, the phenolic resin-impregnated brush tease material is impregnated with 1.1 wt.%, of a thermoplastic fluororesin by a low-pressure impregnation method. After that, its temperature is raised up to 100 deg.C at a temperature rise speed of 10 deg.C/hr, the base material is held at this temperature for eight hours, and this carbon brush material is obtained. In addition, according to the result of a wear test, when the total amount of the resin impregnation amount of the carbon brush material is within a range of 0.5 to 7 wt.% out of 0.4 to 8 wt.%, the carbon brush material is good because of its small wear amount at 5 mm/100 hr.
