PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication band setting method and a communication system by which a communication band in an incoming direction and a communication band in an outgoing direction can be changed. SOLUTION: An xDSL MODEM 30 is provided with data transmission reception means 34 that use a plurality of carrier frequencies to send/receive a data signal, an information storage means that stores information denoting by which of transmission or reception the information is utilized by each of a plurality of carrier frequencies, and a control means 44 that revises the information stored in the information storage means according to a control instruction. The transmission reception processing of the data transmission reception means 34 is controlled according to the information of the information storage means to adjust the transmission band and the reception band.
