PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical reader which can automatically switch a reading mode and a scanning pattern in accordance with the state of an optical reader or the type of a bar code to be read, concerning an optical reader reading the bar code and the like. SOLUTION: A detection sensor for detecting whether a reader is installed on the installation face of a counter or not is provided in the casing of the optical reader. When the optical reader is judged to be installed on the counter by the detection sensor, the optical reader is controlled to be operated in a first scanning pattern/mode and in a second scanning pattern/mode different from the first scanning pattern/mode when it is judged to be not installed on it. Thus, the reading pattern/mode can be automatically switched without making it necessary for a user to operate a switch for changing over the mode. |
