PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a liquid crystal display element with excellent viewing angle characteristics without inversion of the gray scale. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element comprises a liquid crystal layer 108, held between a pair of substrates 107, 109, in which the liquid crystal molecules are 90 deg. twist aligned, and is provided with a viewing angle characteristics improving means and a light propagation direction modulating means. The viewing angle characteristics improving means comprises phase difference compensation plates 106, 106 stuck to the respective outer surfaces of the substrates 107, 109 and improves the viewing angle characteristics in the case the display screen D is observed from an oblique direction except a specified direction which is an inferior viewing angle direction R. The light propagation direction modulating means comprises an optical axis modulating plate 110 stuck to the front side phase difference compensation plate 106 and modulates the light propagation direction to the inferior viewing angle direction R. |
