PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize noncontact detection of torque of a rotator by coupling an input shaft with an output shaft through a resilient member and fixing a rotary disc, provided with a photosensor comprising a photointerrupter, to each shaft. SOLUTION: First and second sensors 7, 8 are contained on the outer circumference of rotary discs 4, 5 fixed to input and output shafts 2, 3. The first and second sensors 7, 8 comprise light emitting elements 7a, 8a and light receiving elements 7b, 8b disposed oppositely to constitute transmission photointerrupters which face the slits 4a, 5a during rotation of the rotary discs 4, 5 and output signals from the light receiving elements 7b, 8b. An elongation spring 6 couples the input and output shafts 2, 3 resiliently. When power is applied from a rotary shaft 1 and the difference of rotational angle is detected based on the elongation of the spring 6, potentials of the first and second sensors 7, 8 are compared and the outputs therefrom are processed. Magnitude of torque is detected based on the difference from a potential when torque is not applied.
