PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the possibility of deterioration of parts due to secondary voltage or high voltage pulse, ambient noise and electric shock to a user by intermittently, not continuously, applying the high voltage pulse in addition to the secondary voltage during starting a high pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION: Switching elements (Q1 through Q4) in a polarity reversing circuit of a load circuit 5 for supplying power to a high pressure lamp DL and a control means 6 for switching-controlling the switching elements (Q1 through Q4) are used. The control means 6 intermittently actuates the polarity reversing circuit to intermittently generate secondary voltage.
