PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for achieving prevention of glare of a single discharge tube switched between high beam and low beam, in the case of a headlamp using a discharge tube as a light source. SOLUTION: This headlamp is equipped with a drive means K for slidingly moving a shade 7 for shading a light source 5 of a discharge tube 4 disposed on a base 1, along an axis Z of the discharge tube 4 as shown by the arrow X. The shade 7 has leg parts 7b linked, through the base 1, to a movable iron 9 of a solenoid 8 disposed on and fixed to the back side of the base 1 by means of rods 6, etc. The moving iron 9 is energized at all times by a spring 10. While the solenoid 8 is in an inactive state, a shading surface 7a of the shade 7 stands in the position of the light source 5 to partly shade the light of the discharge tube 4, thus providing a low-beam light distribution. When a coil 8a of the solenoid 8 is powered, the moving iron 9 is pulled in against the stress of the spring 10, the shade 7 is moved silidingly to shift the shading surface 7a from the position of the light source 5 of the discharge tube 4, and the light from the light source 5 is emitted substantially in all directions, thus providing a high-beam light distribution.
