PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an original from being lost or read by a third person even when the original is left behind on an original platen by providing a key for holding the original placed on an original placing surface in a state where a cover is closed. SOLUTION: The original is placed on an original platen 11 with its image surface downward, the original is pressed by the cover 12 from above, and the key 18 is turned on, so that the cover 12 can not be opened. Thereafter, an operator comes back to a computer used by himself (herself) and transmits an original reading start signal to a control circuit 20 by remote control. Therefore, other operators are prevented from inadvertently opening the cover 12, whereby the original is prevented from being lost and the secret on recorded contents is prevented from being revealed. Furthermore, whether or not image reading operation is being performed in the image reader 10 is easily discriminated because of being locked, so that troublesomeness in use is eliminated.
