PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical isolator which can be produced at a low cost with good reproducibility, which can be assembled in a laser module of large light quantity and which has high performance. SOLUTION: In the optical isolator using a polarizing element and a Faraday rotator, anα-BaB2O4 single crystal (α-BBO) is used as the polarizing element. Theα-BBO is a single crystal which can be easily grown so that the polarizing element can be produced at a lower cost than a method using a currently well- known polarizing glass or rutile single crystal. Moreover, theα-BBO is excellent in the transmitting property in the UV region, and an UV-curing adhesive can be used to adhere the elements. Therefore, workability and joining accuracy for joining can be improved, and an isolator of high performance can be produced with good reproducibility.
