PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary encoder formed so as to reduce the manufacturing cost, by aiming the sharing of parts and facilitating the design change of the number of clicks. SOLUTION: This rotary encoder 1 is equipped with a shaft 5 mounted freely rotatably in a housing 4, a rotary part 6 stored in an internal space S in the housing 4 and fixed on the shaft 5, a detection part P for detecting displacement of the rotary part 6, a gear member 10 stored in the internal space S in the housing 4 and mounted on the shaft 5 and having plural tooth parts 10a on the circumference, press elements (for example, balls) 13 in contact with the gear part 10 from the outside, and an elastic member (for example, a coil spring) 14 for energizing the press elements 13 toward the gear part 10, and has such a formation that plural press element storage parts 11, 12 extended in the diameter direction and having different sizes are formed on the housing side 4, and that the press elements 13 and the elastic member 14 are loaded in the press element storage part 11.
