PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the lighting efficiency of a structure using a light emitting diode to directly light a transparent substrate superposed on a liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: In this surface lighting system, the light from a light emitting diode 4 provided close to a transparent substrate 2 goes out in the direction of observation of the transparent substrate 2. The transparent substrate 2 is provided with groove parts 2a, making a right angle with respect to rays of light outgoing radially from the light emitting diode 4 so that as many rays 5a, 5b, 5c of light as possible go out in the direction of observation. Because the groove parts 2a cause the rays 5a, 5b, 5c of light to advance in the direction of observation, wasteful side leakage of light can be reduced. |
