PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an air conditioner in which heat can be absorbed from outdoor air even during defrost operation and highly efficient defrost operation can be effected in a short time. SOLUTION: The air conditioner comprises a four-way valve 2, an indoor heat exchanger 3, an expansion valve 4, split outdoor heat exchangers 5a, 5b, a change-over valve 7 and a capillary tube 8 disposed in series between the outdoor heat exchangers 5a, 5b while being coupled in parallel, and a bypass pipe 9 provided with a bypass on/off valve 10 for coupling between the four-way valve 2 and the indoor heat exchanger 3 and between the expansion valve 4 and one of the outdoor heat exchangers 5a, 5b. In defrost operation during heating operation, the expansion valve 4 and the change-over valve 7 are closed and the bypass on/off valve 10 is opened and then one of the outdoor heat exchangers 5a, 5b is defrosted while supplying refrigerant from one to the other of the outdoor heat exchangers 5a, 5b through the capillary tube 8.
