PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a track width and a magnetic path length of a recording head to be reduced. SOLUTION: A recording head includes a lower magnetic pole layer 8 (8a to 8c), an upper magnetic pole layer 13, a recording gap layer 12 formed between respective magnetic pole sections of these magnetic pole layers, and a thin film coil 10 disposed between the lower magnetic pole layer 8 and the upper magnetic pole layer 13 so as to be electrically isolated therefrom. The lower magnetic pole layer 8 includes a first layer 8a disposed at a position facing the thin film coil 10 via an insulating layer, and a second layer 8b connected to a surface of the first layer 8a closer to the thin film coil 10 that constitutes the magnetic pole section. The thin film coil 10 is disposed on the side of the second layer 8b. The second layer 8b is formed in such a shape in which a width of a portion disposed closer to an air bearing surface 30 is smaller than a width of a portion disposed further from the air bearing surface 30. In other wards, the second layer 8b is formed in a T-shape when viewed from the side closer to the air bearing surface 30.
