PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform cleaning of a head quickly by detecting adhesion of dust to the head appropriately and conveniently. SOLUTION: At least one of the, current value, voltage value or r.p.m. of a spindle motor 13 is monitored by a sampling circuit 41 and compared with a preset threshold value by means of a comparator 42. If the monitored value exceeds the threshold value, a processing control section 43 makes a decision that dust is adhering to the ABS(air bearing surface) of a flying head slider and actuates a light emitting device 44 or displays information for indicating adhesion of dust on a monitor 45.
