PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe, economical, and highly reliable electromagnetic contactor which protects a load from an abnormal current, and the magnetic contactor from being damaged by abnormal currents. SOLUTION: This electromagnetic contactor comprises a main contact part 14 provided in a main circuit between a power supply and a load, and a coil 2 which electrically closes the main contact part with a part of the power supply, and electromagnetically opens the main contact part in case of the abnormal current. PTC elements (4a, 4b), having a positive temperature characteristic, are connected serially with the coil. The PTC elements are provided closely to the coil 2 and the main contact part 14 of an electromagnetic drive part Trip temperature as a characteristic of the PTC elements is set in the range of 200 to 300 deg.C, to protect it from smoking of the coil, burn, and welding of the contact part.
