PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of an unauthorized writing to a magnetic disk device with no load on a host computer by checking the fact that data are correctly written and conducting a read check of an optimum sector immediately after a writing by the write command from the host computer. SOLUTION: In order to avoid the degradation of the performance in a head checking method, which utilizes a head check dedicated cylinder, a head check is conducted by using a write command from a host computer 10. In the case of having received a write command from the computer 10 and immediately after the completion of the write operation, a read processing is executed from the sector, for which a writing is conducted immediately before, when there exists no command from the computer 10 and a checking is made by comparing the written data with the read data. By employing the check method described above, no seek and write operations to a head check dedicated cylinder are required and a high speed head check is made possible.
