PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carved stamp reader which can be configured compact. SOLUTION: A carved stamp reader 10 is constituted by providing an LED 14, a half mirror 16, a Fresnel(R) lens 18, a photographing lens 20 and an imaging device 22 or the like inside a casing 12 provided with a transparent plate 24 on the upper surface. The Fresnel(R) lens 18 is arranged just under the transparent plate 24 and the half mirror 16, the photographing lens 20 and the imaging device 22 are successively arranged at the lower part of the Fresnel(R) lens 18. Besides, the LED 14 is arranged by the side of the half mirror 16. Thus, a reading object A is irradiated from the vertical downside with illuminating light radiated from the LED 14, and the image of light reflected vertically downward from the surface of the reading object A is picked up by the imaging device 22.
