The inspection chamber cover (4) is hinged to a surrounding frame (5) set in the road. The hinge is made in the form of three cylindrical sections (11, 11', 11) with parallel axes, the middle one (11') being part of a lug (7) on the edge of the cover. The pivots fit into a cage formed between upper (10, 10') and lower (9) walls of a cavity in the frame which has the same diameter as the cylindrical sections and end stops (16. 16) to limit the hinge's axial movement. When the cover is closed the lug conceals the open central portion of the hinge.
