PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image feeder and a picture display device which automatically enable optimal picture display by selectively using an image signal in accordance with an aspect ratio of a display screen. SOLUTION: This picture display device inputs a composited progressive image signal that an image feeder supplies to a division part 22 by aspect by way of a signal input part 21. The division part 22 by aspect divides an image signal into a squeeze component image signal and a wide component image signal by a predetermined method. A display part 30 outputs an identification signal for indicating an aspect ratio of a display screen. An aspect selecting part 23 inputs squeeze and wide component image signals and the identification signal. When the aspect ratio of the display part 30 is 16:9, the squeeze component image signal is selected and outputted; when the ratio is 4:3, the wide component image signal is selected and outputted. A rate converting part 24 performs rate conversion so that the selected component image signal becomes a signal capable of performing screen display at the display part 30, then outputs it to the display part 30.
