PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin sorter capable of identifying the denomination of a coin in a short time. SOLUTION: This coin sorter is provided with a transparent plate 14 for placing a coin A, an illuminating part 26 composed of an upper illuminating part 34 for illuminating the obverse of the coin A arranged on the transparent plate 14 and a lower illuminating part 36 for illuminating the back, an image overlapping part 28 composed of five mirrors 42, 44, 46, 48 and 50, a beam splitter 52 and a photographing lens 54 for optically overlapping a reflected image on the obverse of the coin A and a reflected image on the back, a CCD 30 for picking up the image overlapped by the image overlapping part 2 8 and an identifying part 32 for identifying the denomination of the coin A on the basis of the overlapped image picked up by the CCD 30.
