A cold rolling apparatus (10) includes a forming roll (18) which applies a forming load to a tube (14) when cold rolling the tube (14), and a hydraulic positioning assembly (30) including a positioning roller (60) disposable for initial contact with a tube (14) surface and arranged to apply a positioning load to a tube (14). A hydraulic circuit (103) is coupled to the forming roll (18) and to the hydraulic positioning assembly (30) such that the positioning load is related to the forming load. A face plate (64) mounted for movement with the forming roll (18), and the positioning roller (60) is mounted to the face plate (64). The face plate (64) is coupled to a piston (110) of the hydraulic positioning assembly (30) for movement with the piston (110) relative to the forming roll (18). The piston (110) is housed within a cylinder body (102) coupled to a guide block (72) which is coupled to the forming roll (18). The forming roll (18) is an outside roll, and the cold rolling apparatus (10) includes two positioning rollers (60, 62).
