A coating composition contains: (a) silicone resin; (b) finely divided colloidal silicic acid; (c) one or more silanes; and (d) non-aromatic epoxide resin The coating composition has a storage stable, extremely hard, weather resistant protective coating without the use of additional primers. A new composition for preparation of weather resistant, strong and firm surface coatings contains (parts by wt.): (A) silicone resin of formula: RaSi(OR)bO(4-a-b)/2, where R = 1-8C alkyl or 6-20C aryl and R = 1-8C alkyl (B) finely divided colloidal silicic acid of mean particle diameter 10-2000 nm (5-100); (C) one or more silanes of formula: RnSiX-(4-n), where n = 0-2, X = a hydrolyzable group, and R = as above (D) one or more non-aromatic epoxide resin with at least 1.2 epoxy groups per molecule. Independent claims are included for: (1) a thermoplastic base with the above composition containing enough water for the crosslinking reaction; (2) coating of bases by dipping, spraying, or stretching, with crosslinking of the composition by addition of the required amount of water or by using atmospheric moisture.
