A procedure for dismantling overhead lines (12) which are fastened by insulators, e.g., insulating support chains, to support arms of HV overhead line masts, is described. At one of the two ends of the overhead line to be dismantled, a tension cable (20) is fastened and at the other end, a back stay cable (22). Beside or under each insulator, a cable guide (24) is attached. The overhead line to be dismantled is removed from the insulators and is let down on a cable guide fastened to the respective support arm. The overhead line to be dismantled is drawn off over the cable guides by the tension cable fastened to it and is held by the back stay cable so that is does not get out of the cable guide in an unplanned way.
