A composite particle for imparting flame retardancy (10) which comprises a glass precursor composition (2) which forms a glass-like ceramic upon heating and, coated therewith, a carrier particle (1). The glass precursor composition (2) contains, for example, a silicon component and/or a metal component and oxygen, and the glass-like ceramic formed upon heating contains, for example, oxides of silicon and/or a metal as main components. The addition of the composite particle (10) to a material to be flame-retarded comprising, for example, a polymer material and the like results in imparting high flame retardancy to said material. The above composite particle can impart high flame retardancy with the addition of a small amount thereof, and is free from the formation of a hazardous substance when being produced or being burned and thus is friendly to the environment.
