The system has a magnetic strip sensor for sensing a magnetic strip to produce an analogue signal representing the recorded digital data and the reproducible magnetic property, a digitizer for sensing the analogue signal to produce digitized samples indicating the magnetic property, a signal shaping circuit for providing range data characteristic of the analogue signal and a memory for storing representations of the digitized samples and range data as document identification data. Independent claims are also included for a method of identifying a document with a magnetic strip and for a document or similar with a fingerprint for subsequent identification.
